Pathways to Australian Citizenship
Australian Citizenship by Conferral
Citizenship by conferral is the most common pathway for migrants who have become Australian permanent residents.

- Eligible New Zealand citizens

- Commonwealth Child Migration Scheme migrants
- Children of former Australian citizens in certain circumstances

This visa suits applicants whose occupations are in demand at the state or territory level, even if they may not score high enough for the Skilled Independent visa.
Residence Requirement
In most cases, applicants for Australian citizenship by conferral must:
- Have been lawfully present in Australia on a valid visa for the 4 years immediately before lodging the application.
- Have held Australian permanent residence (or an eligible Special Category Visa (subclass 444) for certain New Zealand citizens) for at least 12 months immediately before applying.
- Not have been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in total during the 4-year qualifying period.
- Not have been absent from Australia for more than 90 days during the 12 months immediately before applying.
If your permanent visa was granted before you arrived in Australia, your permanent residence generally commences when you first enter Australia on that visa. If your permanent visa was granted while you were already in Australia, your permanent residence generally commences from the date the visa was granted.
In addition, applicants must:
- Be of good character (if aged 18 years or over).
- Pass the Australian Citizenship Test, unless exempt.
- Intend to reside in Australia or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia after becoming a citizen
Australian Citizenship by Descent
You may be eligible for Australian citizenship by descent, if:
- You were born outside Australia; and
- At least one of your parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth.
Citizenship by descent allows eligible individuals born overseas to acquire Australian citizenship through their Australian citizen parent.
